Russia to veto UN Security Council resolution to send observers to Aleppo

Russia, with its permanent seat on the UN Security Council, has vowed to veto a French proposal to send the UN and other international monitoring organizations into eastern Aleppo to oversee the process of evacuating civilians and opposition fighters.

Before entering the assembly hall, Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, said that they were going to use their veto against the French proposal to send international monitors to the war-savaged Syrian city.

International political pundits and diplomats have described the French proposal as a call on Syrian parties to commit to the Aleppo ceasefire and help facilitate the UN teams to enter besieged areas where civilians are being evacuated.

An estimated 20,000 people have been evacuated from Aleppo and 30,000 are still trapped inside the city.
