Kurdish President Barzani, Jordan's King Abdullah II meet ahead of economic forum

AMMAN, Jordan — Kurdish President Masoud Barzani has discussed bilateral relations and the latest developments with King Abdullah II in Jordan, where the World Economic Forum on the Middle East is being held.

The visit was announced by the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Royal Hashemite Court.

Hemin Hawrami, a senior assistant to Barzani, tweeted the two leaders discussed the "latest developments and bilateral relations."

Iraqi President Fuad Masum also was received by the King.

The Kurdish leaders are attending the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa 2017 at the Dead Sea near Amman.

More than 1,000 participants from more than 50 countries will attend the three-day summit which will focus on regional economic reform efforts, geopolitical and humanitarian challenges and youth empowerment in the region.

Jordan and the Kurdistan Region have both been affected by the refugee crisis in Syria, and regional extremism.

Barzani visited the King of Jordan in 2014, and attended the forum there in 2015. The two leaders also met at the Munich Security Conference in 2016.

In 2011, Jordan opened its consulate in the Kurdish capital of Erbil, following the first visit of a Jordanian prime minister to the Kurdistan Region.

Kurdistan and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have had historical ties dating back to Mullah Mustafa Barzani and King Hussein bin Talal.
