Repenting Pakistan’s economic backwardness, country’s politician Shahbaz Sharif has expressed deep anguish and regret that India has surpassed his nation in various fields of development. The PML(N) president was quoted by news agency ANI as saying, “Aaj Hindustan G20 mein jaata hai to mere dil ko teer lagte hain ki Modi (prime minister of India) wahan jaake khada hota hai aur hum tamasha dekh rahe hain (Today, India attends G20 summits and I feel the pain as if an arrow pierces my heart to see Modi stand out there while we sit here watching the spectacle).”

Shahbaz Sharif is the brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is incidentally flying back to Pakistan from London later today. He is likely to be arrested along with his daughter Mariyam on the charges of corruption. Nawaz Sharif has been disqualified by a Pakistani court from contesting elections after he was convicted in a corruption case. Shahbaz Sharif is heading his PML(N) in his absence.

As Pakistan heads towards general elections later this month, Shahbaz Sharif was exhorting his countrymen to compare themselves with India that has registered all-round progress. The two countries gained Independence on the same night in August 1947.

Shahbaz Sharif also said, “We thought Bangladesh is a baggage and it slipped off our hands. Look at Sri Lanka, Singapore, China all of them worked on our blueprint and today we have lagged behind. If we don’t learn our lesson then God help us.”

Comparing with India, Shahbaz Sharif said that though it was painful to watch Prime Minister Narendra Modi attend G20 summits standing along with the world leaders, Pakistan had an opportunity to make amends this election. “Let’s convert this opportunity into making it Iqbal’s Pakistan, it is only possible through free and fair elections,” Shahbaz Sharif said.

At another point in his speech, Shahbaz Sharif appreciated India for taking preventive measures to curb and fight corruption. Actions have been taken against political leaders like their former PM Narasimha Rao and a state chief minister J Jayalalithaa. But in Pakistan, he said, there are people who have done scam worth billions and still contesting elections and preaching sermons.
