Afghan National Security Council approves five-year campaign plan after Taliban announce spring offensive
Afghanistan’s National Security Council approved a five-year campaign plan for the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF), local media reported on 13 April. This came only one day after the Taliban officially announced the launch of their spring offensive.
While a government source confirmed to IHS Jane’s that the five-year campaign plan has been approved, the source stated that details of the plan are classified, but that additional information might become available during the upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw on 8 and 9 July 2016.
On 12 April, one day prior to reports on the approval of the five-year campaign plan, the Taliban announced that their spring offensive ‘Operation Omari’ allegedly focuses “on clearing the remaining areas from enemy control and presence”.
