The Australian government has signed an agreement with local industry to sustain the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN’s) fleet of eight ANZAC-class frigates, it was announced on 29 April.
Under what is called the Warship Asset Management Agreement (WAMA), the government will join forces to support the frigates in collaboration with BAE Systems Australia, Saab Australia, and Naval Ship Management Australia, a joint venture between engineering group UGL and Babcock.
The sustainment project is worth AUD2 billion (USD1.5 billion) over the next eight years, with the majority of work scheduled to take place at the shipbuilding complex at Henderson, Western Australia.
