“There are indications that ISIS has again sent fighters to Europe and Belgium,” said Paul Van Tigchelt, director of OCAD, the Belgian body for threat analysis.
There is new information that ISIS operatives “have returned or are returning to Europe with the intention of committing new attacks,” he was quoted as saying Tuesday by Belgium’s De Morgan news website.
“Our services, police and intelligence services, are working around the clock to reduce risk and the judicial investigation also continues, but zero risk does not exist,” he warned.
Tigchelt said that the current threat level, set at three, would not be lowered.
Belgium has been under a security crackdown since a March 22 attack on Brussels airport and another at its Maalbeek metro station that killed more than 30 people and injured dozens.
Authorities linked the bombings to the November 13 attacks in Paris in which 130 people were killed.
