DSA 2016: BrahMos sees missile export opportunities through government links

BrahMos Aerospace – a joint venture (JV) between India and Russia – aims to leverage India’s increasingly close diplomatic ties with Southeast Asia to secure exports of its cruise missile systems.

Sudir Kumar Mishra, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the JV, said India’s ‘Look East’ policy is a key factor in supporting potential sales in the region. The ‘Look East’ approach has been continuing since the 1990s and is intended to develop economic and strategic relations in Southeast Asia to counter China’s influence in the region.

Speaking to IHS Jane’s at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2016 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Mishra said that sales of BrahMos’ cruise missiles, which have been developed for land, sea and air applications, will be strictly governed by New Delhi.
