Happy is the one who says I am a Turk written in New York sky

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—In the lead up to the day of remembrance of the Armenian genocide, an information campaign denying the genocide is being run in the United States.

On Thursday, the clear blue sky over New York was filled with the phrase ne mutlu Türküm diyene, meaning happy is the one who says I am a Turk. The phrase, coined by Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey, is a controversial slogan that carries a sinister meaning for minorities in Turkey, including Armenians and Kurds.

The skywriting plane then followed up with slogans denying the Armenian genocide.

A dance troop, wearing t-shirts bearing the Turkish flag and the logo truth = peace, performed at a Turkish festival in Brooklyn, New York on the same day.

A day earlier, a full page ad appeared in The Wall Street Journal featuring a link to the genocide denying website FactCheckArmenia.com and the same truth = peace phrase.

April 24 is the day of commemoration of the Armenian genocide. It is estimated that 1.5 million Armenians died between 1915 and 1923 at the hands of the Ottoman Empire. Many countries including France, Russia, and Canada have recognized the genocide. The United States has not officially recognized the genocide.

Armenia is hosting the Second Global Forum Against the Crime of Genocide in Yerevan on April 23. Nadia Murad, a Yezidi victim of the crimes of the Islamic State, which have been described by some as genocide, will take part in the forum.
