In the last five years, defence PSU HAL has indigenised over 14,000 systems that go into the various aircraft it manufactures, and the firm which has reported its highest ever turnover this year is looking at involving more and more private player in its effort to implement the ‘make-in-India’ programme.

HAL chairman T Suvarna Raju told TOI that the indigenisation of the 14,370 systems during the said period — 2011-12 to 2015-16 — has saved the firm a total of Rs 414.94 crore, with the majority of it (Rs 126 crore) coming in 2015-16.

“HAL is aggressively developing Indian vendors to take up its indigenisation programmes for implementation. More than 300 systems of avionics, Electrical, Mechanical and Instrumentation which are currently imported are hosted in HAL website to take up for indigenisation by private Industries,” he said.

HAL, which has assembled several aircraft purchased from other countries over the decades has also manufactured a few under transfer of technology like Su-30 MKI from Russia, Hawk, an advanced Jet Trainer from BAE systems, UK, Dornier-228 Transport aircraft from Germany et al. “…But our ultimate objective is to achieve self-reliance in the aerospace sector of our country,” Raju said, adding that the PSU has been working on several indigenous products.

“For the first time, we’ve put in our own money to design and develop an aero engine, Hindustan Turbo Fan Engine (HTFE) with a power of 25kN and recently its core engine run has been successfully demonstrated. We’ve also diversified into unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) business and an indigenous development of a 8-kg class mini UAV and 10-kg class rotary UAV is under progress,” he pointed out.

Besides, HAL is implementing various R&D projects with DRDO labs and several indigenous development projects such as Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), and Hindustan Turbo Trainer (HTT-40) are well under progress.
