Australia’s first Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime multimission aircraft completed its maiden flight in the United States on 24 May and will be flown to Australia in late 2016, the Australian Department of Defence (DoD) announced.

The aircraft, the first of eight whose acquisition was approved in 2014 under Project Air 7000 at a cost of AUD4 billion (USD2.88 billion), flew from Renton Field in Washington State to nearby Boeing Field where its mission systems will be installed, said a DoD statement.

Australia’s Defence White Paper published in February disclosed that an additional seven P-8As are to be acquired in two tranches to bring the total fleet to 15 aircraft by the late 2020s.
