A British Army light mechanised infantry battalion has stood up for the first time as the lead unit of the European Union’s High Readiness Battlegroup after the completion of a certification exercise this month on Salisbury Plain in the UK.

The battlegroup will spend the rest of the year on alert for possible deployment to carry out intervention operations under the banner of the European Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).

British soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment (2 Yorks), were joined by units from Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden for the 18-day exercise that concluded on 20 May.
