The Colombian aerospace company Corporación de la Industria Aeronáutica Colombiana (CIAC) and Airbus Defense and Space will co-design and co-manufacture an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
The project is part of a rapprochement between the Colombian and Spanish ministries of defence, and in March representatives from both ministries and from Airbus met in Bogota to discuss the project.
A CIAC representative told IHS Jane’s on 19 May that a prototype will be ready by 2020.
The new UAV will be based on the Atlante, a system manufactured by Airbus for the Spanish military. Atlante’s maiden flight was in 2013.
CIAC builds the Iris UAV, Colombia’s first domestically manufactured UAV.
