US officials are working to address challenges in remaining ready to fight while US formations in South Korea consolidate and host rotational units.

Camp Humphreys, a garrison in Pyeongtaek about 65 km (40 miles) from Seoul, within the next two years, is to become home of the United States’ Eighth Army headquarters and US Forces Korea headquarters. However, even while they move, those forces must remain ready to fight in case of escalation with North Korea, said Lieutenant General Thomas Vandal, commanding general of Eighth Army and chief of the RoK-US Combined Forces Command.

Lt Gen Vandal praised the recently implemented rotational forces structure for part of the US combat power on the peninsula, but noted that that too could be part of the challenge of remaining ready while moving headquarters and hosting the rotational force.
