An EgyptAir Airbus A320 carrying 66 passengers from Paris to Cairo, Egypt, crashed while traveling from Paris to Cairo, Egypt. French President Francois Hollande confirmed the plane had crashed, but it’s too early to determine a cause. He said terrorism is not being ruled out.
The flight departed Paris Wednesday night, and media reports say the pilot spoke to air traffic controllers about three hours later. Its last radar contact was made several minutes after that. According to Egyptian media, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said there had been no distress call and that the plane had made sudden turns before dropping off the radar.
Greece’s defense minister said it had sent two planes along with naval frigate Nikiforos Fokas and two Super Puma rescue helicopters to an area around Karpathos in the Aegean Sea. Reuters reported that the frigate discovered plastic floating objects in the sea about 230 mi south of Crete, around where the plane’s last distress signal was picked up.
