Jordan’s JADARA Equipment and Defence Systems Company unveiled its new J-9 sniper rifle at the SOFEX show held in Amman on 10-12 May.

Chambered for the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, the J-9 is a bolt-action rifle that weighs 6.2 kg. JADARA says it has a muzzle velocity of up to 925 m/s and a range of 1,500 m. It is fed by either a five- or 10-round detachable box magazine.

JADARA general director Ayman Mashouqah told IHS Jane’s that the rifle will soon be tested by the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) and modified if necessary before it is taken into service. “The sniper rifle will be completely manufactured at the JADARA factory by the end of this year,” he said.

Mashouqah added that the weapon’s long range made it perfect for border protection, as well as counter-terrorism, and that he hoped export orders will follow.

The Jordanian Armed Forces released a photograph last year showing one of its soldiers armed with a SIG Sauer SIG50 .50 calibre anti-materiel rifle that has a similar range. Mashouqah said the J-9 will be competitively priced when compared with such rifles.
