The mural, which depicted Alan in the sleep-like pose his body was found in, has been vandalized with the slogan "Borders save lives!" painted over it. Police suspect far-right activists of defacing it.
The mural was painted by artists Oguz Sen and Justus Becker and was completed in March in Frankfurt's central Osthafen area, near the European Central Bank, according to the BBC.
Police have begun investigations, asking witnesses to come forward as they try to find out who vandalized the artwork.
Three-year-old Alan Kurdi, his mother and one brother drowned in September 2015 when their boat carrying them towards the Greek island of Kos capsized.
