Israel Military Industries (IMI) and US company DRS announced on 22 June that they had won a US Army contract to produce 273 assault bridging launching systems for M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks.
The USD400 million contract includes the option to increase the number of bridging systems to 365, IMI said.
The multi-year contract involves the development, testing, and supplying of the systems, which will be mounted on the Abrams tanks, allowing them to deploy an assault bridge “quickly and accurately, and overcome natural and artificial obstacles during battle, and under fire”, IMI said in a statement.
IMI did the planning and development phases of the bridge launchers, while DRS was responsible for the control and integration systems.
