Kurdish independence important for Middle East stability, says EU VP

Richard Czarnecki, one of fourteen vice presidents of the European Parliament, describes the Kurdistan Region as one of the most important areas of stability in the Middle East region.

The Polish politician visited the Kurdistan Region at the beginning of the year. Recalling that visit, he said, “I remember the strong will of your people to be an independent country. And I think it is the most positive scenario for your country and maybe also for your region.”

He called on the European Union to support the Kurdistan Region militarily in the war with the Islamic State and also in caring for the many refugees and internally displaced being hosted in Kurdistan. If the EU can find money to support Turkey, he said, referring to the migrant deal with Ankara, “we should also open the door for our political decision about financial support for Kurdistan.”

And, he noted, now is the time for action. “I think now is time for decision, not for thinking.”
