Beijing has lodged a diplomatic protest over Australian foreign minister Julie Bishop’s comments on the South China Sea arbitration case and warned Canberra against taking sides in the territorial disputes.

Bishop had on 12 July called on China and the Philippines to abide by a Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling on the South China Sea territorial claims that was handed down on the same day. The tribunal, which was initiated by the Philippines in June 2013 to determine the legal basis of maritime rights asserted by Beijing, has ruled largely in favour of Manila.

“The Australian government calls on the Philippines and China to abide by the ruling, which is final and binding on both parties,” said Bishop in her statement.
