A notification released by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 6 July has revealed that Israel plans to acquire eight surplus US Navy SH-60F Sea Hawk helicopters for its new corvettes.

The DSCA said that the US State Department has approved the possible sale of an estimated USD300 million in equipment and support for SH-60F Sea Hawks, a type that is not currently operated by the Israeli military.

It said the equipment would be for eight surplus Sea Hawks that had been approved for transfer to Israel under the Excess Defense Articles programme under a separate notification. That notification, which has not been made public, only covered the airframes, leaving all the major systems to be covered by the 6 July notification.

These include 12 T-700 GE 401C engines (sufficient for only six twin-engine Sea Hawks), along with the navigation systems, communications, identification friend or foe systems, machine guns, and auxiliary fuel tanks for eight helicopters.

The DSCA said the Sea Hawks would be used on board the “four new frigates [Israel has purchased] to secure the Leviathan Natural Gas Field” in the Mediterranean.

Israel signed a contract with the German shipyard ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in May 2015 covering four corvettes.
