ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Kurdish government officials and politicians have condemned the Friday night attack on a shopping center in the German city of Munich, describing Germany as a crucial ally in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).
Head of the foreign relations department of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Falah Mustafa said in a tweet that he was saddened and shocked by the news of shooting that killed at least nine people and wounded several others.
“Our thoughts & prayers are with the victims, their families & all the people of #Munich & #Germany. We all stand in solidarity with #Germany,” Mustafa tweeted.
Hemin Hawrami, Head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Foreign Relations Office condemned the attack and sent condolences to those affected by “the terrorist act.”
”We strongly condemn the terrorist #MunichShooting. May the soul of the victims rest in peace. Germany is a crucial ally in fighting ISIS,” Hawrami tweeted.
KRG spokesperson, Safeen Dizayee similarly took to Twitter to say: “We strongly condemn the cowardly attack against civilians in #Munich. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected,”
Munich Police Chief Hubertus Andrae identified the attacker on the Munich shopping center as an 18-year-old German-Iranian who opened fire, killing nine before turning the gun on himself.
Germany has been a strong supporter of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the last two years, providing the effective anti-tank Milan missiles and assault rifles.
The German military also opened two training centers for the Peshmerga at a coalition base outside Erbil last week.
