India-Russia ink the S-400 deal worth alone $6bn :: Pak-China rattled

India today announced that it will buy the S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia, worth over $6 billion, and collaborate in making four state of art frigates besides setting up a joint production facility for making Kamov helicopters.

The deals were announced following talks held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.

Missile shoots target at distance of 400 km ::
The missile has achieved a legendary status already, thanks to its stupendous range. It can shoot down targets at a distance of 400 km! So scary is the proposition of flying up against the S-400, that western air forces reportedly reduced their sorties over Syria when Russia placed the weapons system in the country

S-400 can fire 3 different types of missiles ::
S-400 isn’t just a long range stand off weapon; it’s a versatile missile system that can fire three different types of missiles. These missiles vary in range from 120 to 400 km and fly at supersonic and hypersonic speeds. In fact it has anti-missile capabilities that the US Patriot missiles are claimed to have.

Why China, Pakistan are scared ::
What’s riling the enemy however is that India is acquiring a missile system that Russians claim can “radar lock and shoot down” a stealth fighter like the American F-35. Pakistan doesn’t have anything remotely as advanced. The best its air force can muster is an F-16, which is more than 30 years old.
China too is developing two new stealth fighters but is years away from fielding them. And given that they are based on stolen American technology, the S-400 shouldn’t have any problems dealing with them.

India inks S-400 deal for Rs 40,000 crore ::
Like India, China too had signed a deal for the S-400 system back in 2014, and deliveries are expected to begin in 2017. With India now set to acquire the same missile, China’s advantage has been effectively nullified. India is looking to acquire five systems, each of which has eight launchers, a control centre, radar and 16 missiles available as reloads. India is likely to pay Russia Rs 40,000 crore for the S-400.
