Donald Trump becoming the US President will not affect India’s military relations with US, when it comes to do bi-laterally. But defence experts here in national believe that New Delhi needs to wait for Trumps’s policy when it comes to its engagement multilaterally. Like, he was against grouping of any forces to bully a nation. By this logic, naval sources have apprehensions over multilateral naval exercise Malabar between US, India and Japan.

But when it comes to supply of military hardware, situation will not change too much. Last year, Ministry of defence spent nearly 84,000 crore to import defence items from American companies which include C-130J super Hercules, P8I maritime reconnansance aircraft, Harpoon anti-submarine missiles and the C-17 Heavy lift transport aircraft. India has been in the process of procuring 22 Apache attack helicopters along with 15 heavy lift Chinook helicopters for Indian Air Force.

However, military expert believe that Trump’s tough stance on terrorism could also result into deeper Indo-US defence and strategic ties. He had expressed concern over Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal and its support to harbour terrorism from its soil. Moreover, military analysts also ties between US and Russia will also expected to flourish, which is a good sign , as India’s defence and strategic relations with Russia has always been strong.

” Close defence ties might give a further push to Indo-US business ties. Defence Technology Trade Initiative (DTTI) between the two country for joint production and development will further accelerate,” said a defence ministry official, who looks after military relations with foreign countries.

Alexander Gray, a senior military advisor and author of several of the ambitious defence policies of Donald Trump told a news agency that ‘Trump Administration would be looking to strengthen not just the cultural and economic aspect, but also on the defence side there is so much common ground with India. At a time when India’s foreign policy is changing because of China and Pakistan, because of Islamic terrorism, we need to be there to greet them with open arms. I think, the Trump Administration is ready to do that,” Gray said giving an insight into the India policy of a possible Trump administration.”
