Besides the two reactors currently in operation, four additional reactors would be installed at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), site director R S Sundar has said.
Addressing a workshop for journalists on nuclear power generation, reactor technologies, radiation and safety features held on KKNPP premises on Saturday, he said the plant would not have more than six reactors. Sundar said that each reactor has the facility to retain the spent nuclear fuel in it for seven years. In future, a safety pond would be constructed to keep the spent fuel on the plant premises.
According to him, the second cycle of reloading uranium fuel in the assemblies would be conducted in unit-1 in two months. As unit-2 is generating the full capacity of 1,000 MWe power now, dynamic conditional tests and other mandatory tests were to be held.
