The Border Security Force’s ‘Operation Arjun’ is a measure to target residences of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), retired Pakistani Army officers, and Pakistan Rangers who have been given a part of land near the Indian border. Operation Arjun is India’s response to Pakistan’s use of snipers to kill Indian Army soldiers and firing on civilians along the Indian border. India’s measure to counter Pakistan’s unprovoked firing made the latter seeking for a ceasefire, a TOI report said.

It also mentioned Operation Arjun particularly targets “farms and residences of retired Pakistan army, ISI and Pakistan Rangers officers” who have been living near the Indian border to guide the cross-border infiltration, ceasefire violations, and also providing logistical help in “anti-India” operations, top sources were quoted as saying by the TOI.

The report said that following the Operation Arjun by the Border Security Force, Pakistan Rangers’ Punjab DG Maj Gen Azgar Naveed Hayat Khan made a call to BSF director KK Sharma at least twice last week requesting the latter to stop the firing.

Hayat Khan made the first call on September 22 requesting Sharma to stop the firing, which was a response to Pakistan’s unprovoked firing causing loss of life and property on the Indian side. On the call, as reported, Sharma told Khan that his junior, and commanding officer of 12 Chenab Rangers Lt Col Irfan has the tendency to act in “provocative manner”, which could raise the risk of retaliation, as reported by TOI. The second call was made on Monday, September 25.

BSF use small, medium and area weapons causing heavy damage on the Pakistani side and killing at least seven Pakistan Rangers personnel and 11 civilians. Several border outposts and structures of Pakistan army and Rangers were also destroyed by the BSF.

Indian Army officers told TOI that Pakistan’s continuous unprovocative firing on the Indian Army soldiers and civilians prompted the BSF to restructure their operations along the western Indian border. The Indian Army decided to hit where it hurt.
