BAE offers new high-speed, resilient space computer

BAE Systems has unveiled a new high-performance  computer intended to offer satellites and spacecraft substantial improvements  in processing speed, size and power efficiency compared to its predecessor  computer.
  The new single-board RAD5545 SBC, designed as an  upgrade to the existing RAD7450 SBC computer, aims to improve future space  missions in areas such as surveillance, tracking, communications and even  weather and planetary exploration.
  Statements from BAE developers say the new computer is  designed to combine high performance, large amounts of memory, and fast  throughput to improve spacecraft capability, efficiency, and mission  performance. The RAD5545 SBC replaces multiple cards on previous generations of  spacecraft, BAE statements said.  
  It offers simultaneous support for multiple payloads,  enabling missions not possible with previous single-board computers.
  “With its improved computational throughput, storage,  and bandwidth, it will provide spacecraft with the ability to conduct new  missions, including those requiring encryption processing, multiple operating  systems, ultra-high resolution image processing and autonomous operation,” a  BAE written statement said.
  The new computer is part of an ongoing Air Force  effort to improve the technical reliability of space and satellite stations  through emerging radiation-hardening applications. The Secretary of the Air  Force, along with other senior service leaders, has been heavily emphasizing  space warfare strategies in anticipation of a fast-changing threat environment.
