French shipbuilder Naval Group (formerly DCNS) is aiming to build on its existing partnership with India’s defence industry in its bid to supply six next-generation submarines to the Indian Navy (IN) under the service’s long-delayed Project-75(I) programme.
A spokesperson for Naval Group confirmed to Jane’s on 3 November that the company has recently responded to the IN’s request for information (RFI) in support of the INR500 billion (USD7.81 billion) procurement programme and that its proposal is “fully compliant with [IN’s] technical requirements and expectations of high-level performance”.
The spokesperson added, “This includes the maximum usage of indigenous content, transfer of technology, and advanced weapon systems.” The spokesperson also confirmed that the group’s Project-75(I) RFI proposal featured a submarine platform powered by air independent propulsion (AIP) and equipped with land attack missiles.
Under a contract signed in 2005, the Naval Group is currently partnered with state-owned Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) on the programme to build in India six Kalvari (Scorpène) class diesel-electric submarines under Project-75. The first of these boats was delivered to the IN in September and is expected to be commissioned soon.
In the follow-on Project-75(I) programme the Naval Group is thought to be offering additional Scorpène-class boats, but the spokesperson did not confirm this. The spokesperson added, however, that collaboration with local industry will be a key part of its Project-75(I) proposal, the procurement for which is expected to progress as a “Strategic Partner” (SP) programme.
