ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A group of Kurdish political parties have launched a campaign to collect blood for the victims of the Athens deadly wildfire, calling on Kurds to reach out to their Greek “brothers.”
"As a friendly duty and responsibility for the Athens catastrophe, we launched a campaign on Tuesday to call on people to donate blood and volunteer where needed," Rawa Baban, a member of the group, told Rudaw English on Wednesday.
A fire was reported in Mati, Athens, capital city of Greece, on Monday night and it spread to other places including Rafina and Kineta. The fire has so far claimed the lives of at least 74 people.
Baban, who represents the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), said that 22 members of their group, which includes Kurdish political parties from the Kurdistan Region, Rojava and northern Kurdistan, have donated blood at hospitals and have also given large amounts of water to those affected.
"We as Kurdish political parties have committees and will do mutual national activities in Greece," said Baban.
Kurds from different cities have responded to their call, according to the PUK representative who described Greek people as “brothers of Kurds.”
