Dieter Romann personally flew to Erbil in June to pick up Ali Bashar, a Kurd who had fled Germany to his native Duhok to escape arrest in connection with the rape and murder of a 14-year-old German girl, Susanna Maria Feldman.
Kurdish police had arrested Bashar in Duhok after being contacted by Germany’s Interior Ministry.
Bashar was handed over to Romann in Erbil and returned to Germany. In interrogation, he confessed to the murder but denied the rape, according to police.
There was no formal extradition agreed between Germany and the Iraq federal government.
The public prosecutor’s office in Frankfurt confirmed to Der Speigel that an investigation into Romann has been opened.
Bashar had fled to Germany with his family, making a refugee claim in 2015.
