Three Kurdish women drown crossing Aegean Sea: report

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A boat carrying 21 people from the Kurdistan Region has reportedly sunk in the Aegean Sea. Three women have died.

Two of them are sisters from Darbandikhan, named Arazu Tariq and Hawnaz Tariq. The third woman is from Sulaimani, according to Kurda Yashar, head of Iraq’s Refugee Federation in Istanbul.

The body of one of the sisters is still missing.

Eighteen people were rescued and are being held by Turkish security forces who have arrested six smugglers in connection with the incident.

Yashar has asked for help to repatriate bodies of the dead.

“The Iraqi consulate in Istanbul is not responding to our calls for help,” he said.

The 21 people were en route to Europe.
