Yezidi Nobel winner Nadia Murad meets US VP Mike Pence at White House

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Nadia Murad, the Yezidi ISIS survivor who last week won the Nobel Peace Prize for “efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict,” was welcomed at the White House on Tuesday by Vice President Mike Pence and the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump.

Pence tweeted a photograph of their meeting.

The White House is yet to issue a statement about their meeting.

Pence, an evangelical Catholic, is a vocal supporter of the rights of religious minorities in Iraq and the wider Middle East – particularly Christians.

He has spearheaded a package of funding to help these communities.

In the summer of 2014, ISIS militants attacked Shingal. The group killed thousands of Yezidis and took thousands more hostage to be sold into sexual slavery.

Murad, who escaped her captors, says Shingal is still too unsafe to return.
