STAVROPOL, Russian Federation – ISIS attracted foreigners from across the world to become fighters, brides, and servants of its so-called caliphate. One country that saw an especially big wave of its young citizens leave to join jihadist ranks was Russia.

In order to support one another, the families of these runaways have formed support groups. According to one of these groups in Stavropol, southwest Russia, some 1,800 Russian women and children are still missing.
Many are known to have been killed in fighting, while many others are being held in prisons across Iraq and Syria, or living in limbo in camps – something between refugees and captives.
Relatives are unable to get visas to Iraq to try and find them.
Russian authorities, like western governments, are frosty about taking back their citizens who are known to have joined ISIS.
