On February 26, the Indian Air Force observed the first anniversary of the historic airstrikes on a Pakistani terror facility outside the town of Balakot. The day’s proceedings included the IAF chief strapping into a MiG-21 Type 69 for a tribute flight from the Srinagar air base, along with a pair of Mirage 2000s and Su-30 MKIs. Yesterday, the IAF also released a short promotional film showcasing its Mirage fleet in Gwalior.
The video, with lushly shot images of the Mirages, is infused a little disappointingly with generous bits of CGI depicting the jets dropping what look like Paveways-type laser guided bombs on their target. If they were animating this bit, we’re wondering why the IAF didn’t decide to show the Mirages deploying SPICE 2000 munitions, as they did last February, instead.
A second video that’s out by filmmaker/photographer Abhishek Singh (who we’ve previously featured here) is much more interesting. Singh, who’s clearly had access to the 40 Wing in Gwalior, has a short film out that he says he’s dedicating to the IAF air warriors involved in the Balakot air strike. One of the most spectacular assets in the IAF’s arsenal, I loved filming this video, says Singh. It was shot over two days without retakes and during a routine exercise. Here’s the full film:
