The spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, Gen. Dawlat Waziri, said, according to AP, that the airstrike was carried out in the Achin district of Nangarhar. The governor of that district also said the strike targeted a meeting of the ISIS militants.
At least 40 were estimated to have been killed in the strike.
ISIS in Afghanistan have been fighting the Taliban in a bid to secure a foothold in Nangarhar and seeks to takeover the provincial capital, Jalalabad.
The raid came shortly after US Army Brig. Gen. Charles H. Cleveland told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday that the United States military has carried out more than 70 airstrikes against ISIS in Afghanistan so far this year. Most of which were targeting the group in the Nangahar region.
Cleveland says that most airstrikes were carried out in support of Afghan commando raids against the groups positions.
