The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and other Lebanese security agencies are bracing for an expected fresh round of suicide bomb attacks perpetrated by Sunni militants affiliated with the extremist Islamic State group.
Security was tightened across Lebanon after two waves of suicide bombings in the small Christian village of Qaa on 27 June.
The LAF said that four suicide bombers equipped with belts containing 2 kg of explosive and steel ball bearings blew themselves up at about 04.20 local time after their presence was detected in Qaa. Five residents were killed and 19 wounded in the explosions. At 20.30 on the same day, four more suicide bombers, who arrived in Qaa on motorcycles, blew themselves up, wounding another 13 people.
The Airborne Regiment, one of the LAF’s five special forces units, swept through the village and outskirts looking for other attackers, while residents were instructed to stay at home.
