Elbit Systems unveiled the Spectro XR (Extra Range) electro optical payload at the 2016 Farnborough International Air Show.
The Spectro XR is a day/night, multi-spectral electro – optical intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance system. Derived from the compact multipurpose advanced stabilised system, (CoMPASS) family of multi sensor turrets, Spectro XR is suitable for use across maritime, land, and air domains.

Spectro XR uses up to nine optional sensors, packaged into a 15″ turret payload. The system includes a medium wave infrared (MWIR) thermal imaging camera with continuous optical zoom, high definition (HD) day and near infrared (NIR) camera with low light capabilities a continuous zoom. A dual field of view (FoV) short wave infrared (SWIR) camera is also included. Using a modular architecture, Spectro XR accepts a choice of laser payload options including a laser designator, laser rangefinder, laser illuminator, laser pointer, and laser spot tracker.
Yogev Dahan, senior director, EO ISTAR Business Unit ELOP, told IHS Jane’s : “Spectro XR provides the performance of a 20-inch turret in a 15-inch turret payload”.
Spectro XR combines images captured by the different sensors to create a fused image used to enhance assessment, target detection, and target discrimination in cluttered backgrounds. When asked about SWIR, Dahan said, “The SWIR camera is effective in haze and fog and produces good performance in adverse weather. The SWIR channel provides double the range performance of the day channel”.
The system features four-axis gimbal stabilisation and six axes passive vibration damping to produce a steady stable image to improve the reliability, resolution, and accuracy of the system.
Spectro XR includes Ethernet, (1 GigE), MIL-STD-15538, ARINC-429, and RS-422 interfaces that provide easy integration into C2 systems and wider system architectures.
On 13 July 2016, Dahan told IHS Jane’s that Elbit Systems have received orders for the Spectro XR from two unspecified launch customers.
