Rebel forces in Syria achieved an important victory on 6 August, when they overran the Artillery College in southern Aleppo, breaking the encirclement of the eastern parts of the city and cutting an important supply line to pro-government forces in the west.
Numerous rebel groups were involved in offensive that began on 31 July, but Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, the new name of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra, played the leading role in overrunning the Artillery College.
It released videos showing its fighters shelling the base with howitzers and improvised artillery rockets and carrying out two suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) attacks.
