Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a joint press statement with Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon who is in the country on a state visit. The two leaders made it very evident that a strategic partnership was in the works against neighbourhood forces.
Speaking at the joint statement along with President Emomali Rahmon, Modi said, “President Rahmon and I had fruitful discussions earlier today. President and I agreed on the need to increase the scope & scale of our economic engagement especially trade and investment traffic.”
Modi then made it clear that the two countries had a concurring vision for the future of Afghanistan. He said, “President and I agreed that peace in Afghanistan is very important for the region. India and Tajikistan enjoy a rewarding partnership in capacity and institution-building.”
In an evident slam to Pakistan and its role in promoting international terrorism Modi added, “We appreciate Tajikistan’s role in the Central Asian region as a mainstay against the forces of extremism, radicalism & terrorism.” Further, the two countries have agreed to advance trade via the Chabahar port in Iran, which India is constructing mainly as an alternative to the Pakistan dependent Wagah-Attari route.
India’s military presence in Tajikistan is significant. The Indian Air Force’s presence in the Farkhor base at Tajikistan has been a constant sore spot for both China and Pakistan. India is the only country after the US, Russia and Germany to have a military base in central Asia. India has also established a military hospital in southern Tajikistan.
It seems Prime Minister Modi is strategically strengthening diplomatic relations with countries neighbouring Pakistan.
Tajikistan is also crucial due to its geographical presence on the other side of Pakistan occupied Gilgit Baltistan.
