Turkey Seeks Russian Loan To Buy S-400 Systems

Turkey has announced its wish to obtain Russia’s loan to buy weapons, including S-400 (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) air defense missile systems, Rostec state corporation CEO Sergey Chemezov told the Rossiya-24 TV channel on Tuesday.

“They have voiced their wish to get a loan, but now the issue has not been solved. The Finance Ministry is holding talks, as soon as they sign this and take a decision on allocating a loan, we will already ink contracts on supplies, including of S-400,” Chemezov said.

The Rostec CEO gave no details on when this decision could be taken.

In February, Chemezov said that Turkey had shown interest in the Russian-made S-400 system and was in talks with Moscow on the possible supplies. In November 2016, Turkish National Defense Minister Fikri Isik reported about these talks.

China was the first to buy the Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile systems. It was announced in the spring of 2015 that the relevant contract had been signed. According to media outlets, the deal was worth about $3 billion.

In October 2016, Russia and India signed an intergovernmental agreement on the delivery of S-400 systems.
