Despite Rivalry, Indian and Chinese Warships Jointly Foil Pirate Attack In Gulf Of Aden

On 8th of April, Indian Navy and Chinese Navy conducted a successful anti-piracy operation. Indian Navy and Chinese Navy joined hands to save the ship and its crew of a bulk carrier ship OS35, off the coast of Aden which was suspected to have been hijacked by Somali pirates on Saturday.

Today on 9th of April Indian Ships managed to establish contact with the hijacked ship. The captain and the crews of the hijacked ship locked themselves in the strongroom. Strongroom is the place where the crew of such can hide and contact any friendlies for help. After receiving the distress call Indian Navy responded swiftly and sent INS Mumbai and INS Tarkash for rescue.

After reaching near the hijacked ship, Indian Navy launched an aerial recon mission in which an Indian Navy helicopter carried out aerial recon. After confirming the deck is clear, the crew of the ship showed up. Later, an 18-member Peoples Liberation Army Chinese Navy team from its warship PLA-CNS Yulin boarded the ship, while the Indian Navy helicopter provided air cover for the massive 171-metre long X 28 meters wide, 18-year-old bulk carrier.

Chinese Navy carried out a full search of the ship but couldn’t make contact with the pirates. The Pirates escaped in the cover of darkness after finding that help is on its way. The crew of the ship thanked Indian and Chinese Navy. Later both Indian and Chinese Navy thanked each other and head back to home. This incident set an example of international cooperation between two major naval power despite having some regional issues. This issue confirmed that they can work together in future to restore peace.

The hijack was confirmed byGraeme Gibbon-Brooks, the head of private company Dryad Maritime Intelligence on Saturday. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which coordinates shipping in the Gulf of Aden area, said on its website it had received a notification earlier on Saturday from a vessel in an area in the Gulf of Aden that was under attack and may have been boarded. “Vessels transiting the area are advised to exercise extreme caution,” UKMTO said, without giving more details.
