Fire rips through French migrant camp after brawl between Kurds, Afghans

ERBIL, Kurdistan  Region —  At least 10 people were injured in a large fire that broke out in a migrant camp near the northern French city of Dunkirk on Monday night, after a fight between many Afghans and Kurds at the camp.

"There is nothing left but a heap of ashes," Michel Lalande, prefect of France's Nord region, told a France 24 reporter at the scene as firefighters continued to battle the flames at the Grande-Sythe migrant camp.

Lalande, according to France 24, said the blaze was started after a fight on Monday afternoon between Afghans and Kurds at the camp that had left six injured with knife wounds.

The ethnicities or nationalities of the injured were not immediately released.

"It will be impossible to put the huts back where they were before,” Lalande reportedly said.

A spokesman at the regional prefect's office said that 165 people had already been taken to makeshift shelters, Reuters reported.

“At least six migrants were wounded after scuffles and a knife fight which prompted riot police to intervene,” Reuters reported. “That led to further clashes between security forces and between 100 and 150 migrants.”

The camp, which is also known as Liniere is on the road between Calais and Dunkirk. It was built to United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) standards and opened on March 7, but the cost of its construction has been debated between French government factions.

Its population has grown since the closure after the destruction of the nearby “Jungle” camp.

Police intervened at Grande-Sythe last month after five men were injured in a fight, and another man was stabbed in November, AFP reported.
