Death Army Officer Umar Fayaz’s killing has harmed Kashmir cause

Any resistance or struggle needs fuel to survive else it ceases to bear fruits. In the present scenario, Kashmir has reached  a stage where only those people who get hefty bucks in their accounts on first day of every month want Kashmir to remain burning while as a helpless and poor labourer who in some cases has to feed five unmarried daughters wants peace to prevail so that her daughters are not forced to tread on wrong path for their survival.

In the pursuit of Azadi you cannot be at war with your own people and snatch their right to life bestowed to them by the Allah Almighty.

Moreover, we have no right to impose our ideology on others and force them to follow our path. You cannot take anyone on your track forcibly. Islam doesn’t allow such acts.

On May 9, Umar Fayaz Parray, a 22-year-old army officer from Kulgam district in South Kashmir, was abducted and killed. He was home on a fortnight’s leave from the Akhnoor sector in Jammu, where he was posted. According to local journalists, he had already spent 12 days at his home in Sudsona village. Parray was at his cousin’s wedding in neighbouring Shopian district when he was kidnapped.

As news of the killing broke on Wednesday, Parray’s name was swept up in a social media storm. His death was condemned by a range of public figures, from Defence Minister Arun Jaitley to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

There was renewed criticism of “stone-pelters”, “terrorists” and “anti-nationals”. There were tributes holding him up as a model Kashmiri, in contrast to Burhan Wani, the Hizbul Mujahideen commander whose death last July triggered a summer of violent protest. It was reminiscent of the split screens on television last year, showing Kashmiri Indian Administrative Service officer Shah Faesal on one side and Wani on the other, until Faesal himself protested this formulation in a strongly worded opinion piece.

Hours after Ummer Fayaz was killed, his batchmate from school, Sajid Yusuf, took to Facebook. “Sad news for us all Ummer Fayaz our class mate of JNV Anantnag killed by militants in Kulgam last night. May his soul rest in peace!” Mr Yusuf wrote.

“It was a cold blooded murder because he was not in uniform at that time, he was picked up from his cousin’s marriage and later killed in Shopian,” Sajid Yusuf, a schoolmate of Ummer Fayaz told NDTV.
While the rest of the country has been unanimous in condemning the murder, opinion from Kashmir was somewhat divided.

May good sense prevail.
