Trump congratulates Erdogan on presidential election

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — US President Donald Trump congratulated Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on his election success in telephone call on Tuesday.

“Noting the strategic partnership between the USA and Turkey, both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment on the development of bilateral cooperation in all fields including defense and military relations in the future,” read a statement from the Turkish presidency.

They also discussed Manbij roadmap and the fight against terrorism.

Erdogan said both leaders will meet during Brussels NATO Summit from July 11-12.

Preparations for the phone call were being arranged on Monday, AP reported. There was no immediate readout from Trump's office.

"We are also working to set up a call between the President and the President of Turkey to reaffirm our strong bond.  We encourage Turkey to take steps to strengthen its democracy and continue progress toward resolving issues in the bilateral relationship," White House Spokesperson Sarah Sanders briefed reporters on Monday.

Erdogan has now been congratulated by the leaders of all permanent members of the UN Security Council: the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, and additionally by Germany.

Erdogan secured 52.38 percent of the presidential election on Sunday, according to results released by state-run Anadolu Agency. His AKP party won 295 seats. Together with the Nationalist Movement Party's (MHP) 67 seats, as a part of the People's Alliance, they will control the majority of the Grand National Assembly's 600 seats.
