Argentina buys 20 JetRangers from Italy

Two Bell Jet Ranger 206B helicopters sit ready after passing a Government Acceptance Inspection Dec. 4 at Kirkuk Regional Air Base, Iraq. A total of five Jet Rangers arrived here on board a C-17 Globemaster III, Dec. 3. The rotary aircraft were shipped over from the United States, where they were converted, from multiple sources such as commercial use, to military use to be used as trainers for the Iraqi Air Force. They will later be joined by five other Jet Rangers from Taji, Iraq, to help establish the Iraqi Air Force Squadron 2. According to the Security and Training Management Organization the arrival of the aircraft is another step forward for rebuilding the Iraqi Air Force and training their next generation rotary pilots. The Argentine government has purchased 20 Agusta-Bell AB 206 JetRanger helicopters from Italy, after almost eight years of negotiations.

The helicopters, which belonged to the Carabinieri and are in storage, were originally offered at the end of 2008 and negotiated in exchange for five AgustaWestland A 109A Powers and three Alenia G222 airframes the Argentine Army had in its inventory but which were not in service. However, the former Argentine government never gave the deal final authorisation.

Logistics Secretary Walter Ceballos was recently sent by Argentina’s new administration to Italy to sign the contract for the 20 helicopters for about USD3 million in a deal including spares, 10 GAU-17 Miniguns, and five stretchers.
