Japan’s new defence minister, Tomomi Inada, vowed on 4 August to “fully prepare” the country’s Self-Defense Forces (SDF) for expanded missions overseas under the new security laws.
“[The ministry] will take all appropriate measures so that the [SDF] can adequately conduct missions given to them,” Inada was quoted by Kyodo news agency as saying a day after the lawmaker, known for her nationalist views on history, assumed the post.
Since the new security legislation took effect in March, the focus has been on when Tokyo will expand the role of the SDF engaged in UN peacekeeping operations in South Sudan.
