FM determined ‘to do even more to fight root causes’ of terror

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said her country is determined to fight the root causes of terrorism, it will reciprocate the solidarity it has been shown, and that it has received condolences and support from around the world a day after a man hijacked a truck and drove into a crowd of people killing four and injuring at least 15 others.

"We have received condolences and messages of compassion and support from all around the world. But also determination to do even more to fight the root causes of terrorists, but also terrorism in itself. And we will not let this conquer Sweden or our determination to fight terrorism around the world,” Wallstrom told Rudaw on the streets of Stockholm on Saturday afternoon.

Wallstrom wasn’t ready to indicate that the attacks would shift Sweden’s role in fighting terrorism abroad.

"It's very important that we think of those who are dead and injured after such a heinous attack as we've seen in Sweden,” she said.

Swedish officials have not announced the name of the suspect in Friday’s attack.

"We will continue to be to committed to respecting the laws of asylum,” Wallstrom said. “We have nothing to be ashamed of. We have been extremely generous and we will continue to insist sharing the responsibility with other EU (European Union) countries.”

She said the Swedish government is committed to keeping Swedes safe.

"We will do everything we can to make sure the Swedes feel safe and secure in this country,” Wallstrom said. “We will continue to show solidarity as we've been shown solidarity from around the world.”

Sweden is a member of the international coalition to defeat ISIS and has military advisors stationed in the Kurdistan Region.
